Every good marketer knows that Youtube videos can help your business get noticed in several ways online. A well optimized Youtube Video linked back to your website will help boost the site’s rankings, and can also rank very well on the search engines by itself if it’s a good video. However, Youtube videos need to use best practices when it comes to Search Engine Optimization to perform well or help boost a website’s performance.
But how do you properly optimize a Youtube Video?
This article today will go through the best practices steps of Youtube SEO and how you can get more views on Youtube, better rankings within the Youtube community, and quite possibly land your video on the front page of Google in your niche. Here are 7 Tips to Boost Youtube Video SEO on your content:
Youtube SEO Tip #1 – Name Your Video File as Your Targeted Keyword
Just like writing content on your blog, alt-text for your images, and heading tags for your blog posts, Google reads your Youtube video’s file name as well. If your Youtube video is labeled “video1234.mp4” you could be missing an opportunity to tell Google what keyword you want to rank for.
Simply rename the video by right clicking the file, changing it to Youtube-video-seo-tips.mp4 for example if you’re trying to rank for Youtube Video Seo Tips.
I always use a Dash “-” between keywords as a best practice for SEO for images or videos. Don’t overdo it by putting too many keywords in the file name. Google doesn’t like keyword stuffing, and will penalize you for it.
Youtube SEO Tip #2 – Try to Post Your Video onto Other Sites with Youtube Link Included
In the early days of Youtube video marketing, you had a great chance of ranking videos no matter what video platform you used because the competition wasn’t using a lot of video, people loved the content, and therefore Google ranked videos very well. All you had to do was add a relevant title, appropriate tags, and presto, your video usually ended up on the front page for your keyword quickly.
Things have changed obviously, Google owns Youtube, and there is a definite slant in favor of ranking their own platform’s content.
Again, as with websites back links to other websites, including other video site submissions, will help your Youtube video rank better overall. Google operates Youtube, not Facebook, Daily Motion, Vimeo or another website. So if you submit the link to your video on a competing video site, I’ve found that this helps rank your video.
You also want to link your video to as many possible websites as you can without trying to spam the link. Many websites won’t let you link a video, or embed it, but a site I own actually helps promote small businesses. We approve most listings if they are legitimate small businesses, and you can get a free business directory listing that will include your video on the site.
You can also leave anchor text links on the site which can be very powerful for website SEO or Youtube SEO depending on what type of property you are trying to rank. Anchor text is basically a link that you place to your website with the keyword in the link such as the one above I used for “free business directory listing” to my site 360BusinessReviews.com.
What anchor text does is essentially send a signal to Google that we “offer free business directory listings” if that makes sense, but be careful with anchor text. If you overdo it, you WILL get penalized. Use different keyword variations in your niche, your brand etc. Only use 5-8% of your links, max, for exact keyword terms you want to rank for when using anchor text.
We have several sites that offer great links, (and why I created them for SEO purposes) but leaving comments on other blogs in your niche can really help your video rank better, and quickly. Google the term “blog search”, then search for your niche keywords to link to relevant sites with good quality comments, not spammy comments (ugh), and leave the link of your video in the website section of the comment form.
If you want to get put in the Google sandbox in a hurry, write spam comments. If you own a site, you’ve undoubtably received spam comments to viagra or such sites that make no sense. Improve the internet space by writing valuable comments and your odds of your link sticking are very good.
Youtube Optimization Tip #3 – Write Good Titles, Tags and Descriptions
You should include the name of your YouTube channel, and you should start the description with a url to your website in the very top of your description. Include http:// in front of your domain to create a link so that people can find out more about you and your products. You have up to 5000 characters to write a good long description. Write a novel in there! 🙂 Also, you can put multiple keywords spaced by commas in the tags section.
I wrote a very good article on Youtube SEO Best Practices here if you want to go into further detail.
Youtube Best Practices Tip #4 – Transcribe Your Video
The use of transcriptions, annotations and closed captions really don’t get talked about enough when it comes to Youtube SEO. I use a Youtube SEO tool that is absolutely incredible and it allows you to “spy” on your competitors for Youtube videos, websites, look up keywords, back links, Moz Rank and all kinds of great SEO data that helps me rank videos quickly. One thing I’ve noticed is that on the Vidneos Youtube Video SEO Tool, it shows that many of the top videos on Youtube are using transcriptions, or closed captions, on their Youtube videos.
It’s a way to blend in keywords into your video without just the text and tags section. When you click on the CC portion in the Youtube editing section, you can press that you want to translate in English language, etc and Youtube will do its best to transcribe the content into words as it hears it. Vidneos also shows links, keywords used, titles, descriptions and just about anything you can think of for spying on your competition. Go buy this Video Ranking software yesterday. It’s that good and up until today, I’ve never told anyone about it. As far as transcriptions, I also suggest…
Youtube SEO Tip #5 – Take the Time to Type in Correct Transcription
As I mentioned, Youtube will try to transcribe the video as best it can, but remember it is software and a computer. If you really want to improve the SEO of a video, and you want “this particular video” to rank, type the transcription manually or hire someone to do it for you. Youtube will wait on you and pause the video as you type the transcription, or you can upload a transcription, to make sure it’s accurate, and you can also use the automated transcription it offers.
Typing it is more accurate obviously, but more time consuming. Annotations are similar. Include keywords with links to other videos that are relevant to your video or in your niche. This can make a huge difference for Youtube SEO and something not many people discuss.
You obviously don’t want to do this for every single video because transcriptions can be annoying. However, Youtube transcriptions have their place and you can allow for them on the screen if you plan ahead with your video editing. It really works well
Youtube Video Ranking Tip #6 – Increase Audience Retention
‘Audience Retention’, or watch time, is the total time viewers spend watching your video. The higher percentage of your video that gets watched, the better off you will be in ranking your video.
Don’t Kill Your Audience Retention Yourself or Inside the Company
How does this happen? You make your video, you upload it, you want to check and make sure everything is ok, so you play it. Then you stop and play it again and again in short clips. Same is true of other employees and it’s happened to me with clients before. They killed their video the first day with audience retentions of 10% or less. They just won’t rank well unless they are 55% or higher in my experience and you can track this inside of your Youtube analytics section.
Make Your Videos Shorter in “Bite Size” Segments – 2-3 Minutes is Optimum in Most Cases
Break up a long video into 3 or 4 shorter videos and link those videos to each other to go to part 2, 3 etc. Break up parts of the video and explain it on it’s on to your viewer as another piece of content. This is another key component of Youtube SEO and that is consistency. The more consistent you are at creating content, with good audience retention, the better your reputation becomes with Google and Youtube. We offer a service for small businesses to place their videos on our 360 Business Reviews channel that averages about 70-75% retention, and I can tell you that audience retention makes a huge difference in getting your video ranked.
Tip #7 for Youtube SEO – Optimize Your Channel Completely!
You’re almost done with getting everything in order! 🙂 You’ll want to make sure that you make a good Youtube Channel art picture that is labeled with your niche keyword. Go out to Canva.com to make COOL Youtube Thumbnails and Youtube Channel art pictures. It’s completely free and some of the best graphic design software I’ve ever used! Making good thumbnails absolutely helps get better click throughs on your videos. Make the Youtube Thumbnails at 1280 x 720 Pixels and they’ll fit perfectly. Canva is perfect for this!
Write a good description for your Youtube channel without stuffing your keywords, include links to your website, Facebook and Google Plus. Speaking of Google Plus, use it! It rocks for getting views on your videos if you will work on getting followers and connecting with people there in addition to Facebook. It’s like
Facebook, only your Youtube channel is tied to it.
Guess what that means?
If you have a lot of followers and subscribers on Youtube, you will get more views on your Youtube videos. More views = Better ranking.
And that’s a wrap on Youtube Search Engine Optimization for now!
Whether you’re brand new to Youtube or a serious marketer, you can use these same strategies I’ve used to get several thousand subscribers on Youtube and over a million views on a couple of my channels I operate for pretty mundane content. 🙂 I actually enjoy SEO and marketing (I do it for small businesses for a living) and that’s just me. Hopefully you do as well and I do hope this has helped. Put these 7 Youtube SEO tips into action and I promise it will make a difference, and quickly!
Have a great week everyone!
