The Slight Edge Success Principles
Those that do the “Thing” have the power. Those who don’t do the thing have not the power – Ralph Waldo Emerson
Why do people fail at Network Marketing? Better yet, why do people fail at life in general? Ever wondered why some people seemingly have everything figured out, yet others always seem to barely get by in life? Some people have the gift of being able to turn everything they touch into Gold, while others are constantly searching for “the next big thing”, the “Easy Button” and it always seems to escape them.
I’ve been reading a book recently called “The Slight Edge” by Jeff Olson. Hands down this is the most powerful book on personal development that ANYONE can apply into their daily life to turn it around in 90 days or less. I read it on a flight to Vegas last week, and it’s already making a difference in my thought process.
I would say that in the last few years I’ve been guilty of chasing the easy solution to riches, but I’ve discovered that it doesn’t exist. If it does, it simply won’t last. We need to stop trying to build something long-term that won’t be there long-term.
I got involved in a terrible situation this past summer with a Penny Auction company. It was, and still is, a nightmare. The lesson I learned if something sounds too good to be true, 99.9% of the time it won’t be. Get rich quick schemes just don’t exist, and I hope to help you learn something from the mistakes I’ve made in my business career.
Some of you are looking to be Entrepreneurs for the first time, and for that I applaud you. If you depend on a W2 job solely, I think there are huge advantages to owning a secondary business. For those of you that are Entrepreneurs already, you know there are ups and downs. Things aren’t always easy for sure!
No matter who you are or where you are in your career, I hope you will find “The Slight Edge” principles to be as compelling as I have. Quite frankly, The Slight Edge is THE secret to being successful. The Slight Edge is literally the answer to the puzzle in your mind filled with vast knowledge of personal development.
The Slight Edge Principles are easy to do as you already possess the skills needed to be successful, yet they are also easy not to do.
Sometimes the results are invisible with no immediate or noticeable gain. If I work out one time will it make a difference? If I eat one Hamburger and an order of fries will I gain weight immediately or impact my health?
Our lives are predicated on the choices that we make…plain and simple. If I eat the Hamburger or fried food today, its no big deal. If I skip a workout today, it won’t kill me right? However, if I repeat those bad choices over time we all know it will dramatically alter my health and physical appearance. So why do we keep making bad choices repeatedly?
Because it’s easy to do and its comfortable. Conversely, I may not want a salad or something healthier to eat, or I may not feel like working out, and its usually because I’m overwhelmed or too busy to focus on a few daily disciplines that will positively affect my life.
THAT is the key, and I’ve known that all my life but The Slight Edge reminded me of my most successful periods of my life where I worked out often (4-5 Days a week) because I felt better doing it. I also had simple daily disciplines for myself I followed every single day without fail in my career as well. Looking back I can put my finger on the “Little things” that made me successful.
I struggle with ADHD terribly and it’s hard to focus. With that said, I try to “Eat the Elephant” everyday and don’t always get done what I want to. I’ve had a difficult couple of years dealing with a personal issue with a very negative influence that I let get the best of me. I haven’t been as productive as I’d like, and I just got a little sidetracked in dealing with it. However, I let that go back in August and I’ve seen a huge difference in myself as well as my productivity.
The Slight Edge was further confirmation that I’m on the right track. I hope it will help you as much as it’s helped me to focus on the smaller daily disciplines that will impact me over time.
It really is the little things that will make you successful in life, that will secure your health, your happiness, your fulfillment, your dreams, are simple, subtle, tiny things that nobody will see, nobody will applaud and nobody will even notice while it’s happening. Real success is taking a progressive approach to your success. Olson says, successful people do that by choosing the right attitude and actions day in and day out, allowing those actions to compound over time and then continuing to do them in very key areas of your life.
The Slight Edge principal is rooted in logical thinking, and yet, he points out, many people don’t do it. In our haste for immediate results we seek the fast fix, the secret ingredients and the one perfect formula for success. The Slight Edge teaches you that it’s the things you do every day, the things that don’t look like they matter, that do matter. They not only make a difference – the make all the difference.
7 Slight Edge Principles
The Slight Edge can work for or against you. In Chapter 6 Olson identifies the 7 Slight Edge Principles to create a game plan for success over the long term.
