How to Choose a Home Based Business
Are you one of the many people searching for a home based business in 2012? Want to be able to work from home? Do you desire to build your own business, having something to call your own? Millions of Americans every year become home based business owners, and the task of finding the perfect home business fit for you can be daunting, to say the least.
There are many things to consider when looking for the right home based business for you. You need to take into account your time availability, your personality, your talents and strengths, the amount of money you have available to start a business, your family and other busy aspects of your life.
I have seen too many people give up on their quest in being able to work at home because they get frustrated in the initial search process. In this day and age of “I want it now”, many people jump ship and close the door on a potential life change, all because of impatience. Before starting a home business, you need to realize that this initial process is THE most important step in whether you will see success as a home business owner or not. If you don’t take the time now to research the vast number of opportunities available, with diligence and honesty, you will most likely not experience the success that you had hoped to find.
Some who are desiring to work at home, may even discover that working at home just isn’t for them. But that is why this first step is so critical for you to take slowly and seriously.
There are four routes to take when choosing and starting your home based business:
1. Start a Business You Can Be Passionate About
If you love writing, then start a freelance writing business or create an information-based website. If you are a health nut, find a business that revolves around weight loss, or nutrition. If you are a neat freak and loves to organize, then consider a business organizing other people’s houses, or start a website dedicated to home organizing. If you like emerging technology like me, find a business with a unique technology platform that will help people be more efficient in their business or marketing.
You have to remember, though, that passion does not always translate into a good business opportunity. Ask yourself: “Is there money in my passion or hobby?” Starting a business doing what you love to do is no guarantee for success. Many hobbyists who turn their hobbies into businesses fail because their markets are too limited; or they are unable to find customers for their products. The key is to determine whether there are good business opportunities for your passion, and identify how best to exploit these opportunities.
2. Start Where You Are Today
You already have superior knowledge in your current industry. If someone you know is willing to teach you the concepts of blogging and affiliate marketing, then this can be a great opportunity for you to start a Web-based business centered around that business without affecting your current income. Having someone to guide you in the right direction teaching you everything from getting traffic to identifying the best money making programs for your website is an opportunity too hard to resist. Hint…I know a guy like that
You may also have a lot of unique items in your house, so start a business selling them on eBay. You can also find items to sell on Ebay, but I prefer affiliate marketing programs in addition to Ebay marketing.
3. Start a business that you think has the best potential.
It may be a business that you know nothing about, but if you think that the business is where the action will be in the near future or that there is such potential in the business, you can certainly choose that path. Bill Gates once said “Find out where the masses are going, and try to get there first”. This is what I have done my entire business career with Nextel and Wireless, Deregulation of Telecom, Pagers, and Dish Network Satellite Systems. I didn’t know anything about them at the time, but I knew they would be hot opportunities in the future. This is also why I market Talk Fusion today, but if you have knowledge of a hot sector you’re passionate about…GO For it! It won’t be easy, but you have to be willing to learn and be diligent in learning everything about the business. Buy books on how to start the business, visit websites or find out if any trade magazines are published and subscribe to them.
4. Start a Business on Your Own Invention or Idea.
You can start a business by developing and marketing your inventions, or traditional business products. While you can opt to sell the rights to your product and wait for licensing royalties, you can also be more proactive and start working on the product yourself. This type of business will be more difficult, requires capitalization (the amount will depend on the type of product you’ve created), and entails marketing and financial savvy. I have started several businesses in the past, but I know appreciate the fact in Network Marketing that someone else has already set up the business plan. They have the patents, technology, accounting, products, and all I have to do is market them and teach others to do the same. However, if you have a solid idea, take massive action and go for it!
The key is to identify a need – and the more people who have this need, the better – and develop a product that would answer that need. With inventions, the marketability of the product is essential, especially if the product entails a high development cost. Someone must be willing to buy the product for an invention to succeed.
Either way you choose to start a home based business, commit to your plan, take massive action, and focus on daily activity that builds your business. This blog is perfect for these times when so many people are thinking about starting their own business. I have met many people who jump into their own business without considering the steps you mentioned. Your point regarding starting a business you can be passionate about included something that I rarely read in business books or self-help books and that is passion does not always translate into a good business opportunity. I always read “do what you are passionate about…” but they don’t add the other side to it. So thank you for adding that bit of “reality check.”
Thank you Eleanor! I really appreciate that and I agree. Just because someone has a cool idea doesn’t mean there’s a sustainable market for it. Go where the masses are going, and try to get there first. Let me know if I can help in any way. THanks
